“Papillons” is a suite of 12 brief dance-like pieces reminiscent of a masked ball. While there is no program as such, the final piece concludes with a reprise of the first waltz overlaid with 1830’s equivalent of “The Party’s Over” and a tolling bell marking the end of the ball. After the clock strikes six the ball ends, and as the guests leave a chord is made to disappear gradually to silence.
