Welcome to Oceana! This program features musical settings of oceans and seas. The first half of the program involves increasingly intense storms. In the Purcell, the sailors experience the stormy wind and are saved. The waters rise higher and higher in the Mondonville, and the Draughn “Wade in the Water” warns that “God’s gonna trouble the water”. In an account and reflection of one of the world’s worst shipwrecks, the Mäntyjärvi describes the fate of the ferry Estonia during rough weather. The Parry and Draughn’s world premiere “On This Wondrous Sea” address a Pilot who will navigate us out of these storms, and look toward a better future. The Abela concludes the first half by imagining the sky as a night ocean, orchestrated specially for this concert. Finally, the cantata Oceana by Golijov summons the goddess Oceana and dreams of all that an ocean can be.
