Turkish Music Workshop

In this workshop, Club members explored the world of makam, which is the basis for much of the modal music traditions of the Middle East, including Turkish music. Our leaders were Tev Stevig and Michael Harrist from the ensemble Cesni Music.

Through an informal discussion, we learned some basic ideas encompassed in makam which the leaders illustrated with short performances. We learned how basic western musical concepts such as scales, chords, and rhythms are  used in Turkish makam in different ways.

We all participated in performing short pieces in one of the basic makams in the Ottoman art music tradition in a call-and-response style.

Tev Steveg has studied and performed music from the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey for over 18 years, the last 13 of which has been primarily focused on the Ottoman classical music tradition. He and Michael have worked together and with visiting artists from abroad for the last 10 years.
